About the Author

Zora Neale Hurston is an American author, filmmaker, and anthropologist. Most of her works represent racial discrimination in the early 1900s. Along with four novels, she writes over 50 short stories, essays, and plays including Their Eyes Were Watching God. Most of her works are based on the background of Eatonville, Florida, where she shifted with her family in 1894.

She pursued anthropological and ethnographic research at Barnard College and Columbia University. She was interested in African American culture and raised her voice for the black community and racial discrimination. However, her work was underrated by society for decades. From 1975 onwards, the work of Their Eyes Were Watching God’s author came into light in the literary world, and her work has continued to be one of the works for social issues still relevant to our present generation.

Their Eyes Were Watching God: Summary

This is a story of a mixed-race African American woman named Janie Crawford who recollected her life journey to her friend while returning to her hometown. She was a rapped child as her mother and grandmother were raped by a school teacher and a white enslaver, respectively. Even though Janie has only one wish to find real love, she has been through three marriages in Their Eyes Were Watching God.

When her first marriage was a compromise to fit in a society with the acceptance that can eliminate her birth stigma of being a raped child, her second marriage was also a consequence of the stereotypical concept of marriages where she got abused and treated as a doormat. It didn't have any freedom to fulfill her wish. Even though she found her love of life in her third marriage with a much younger boy in Their Eyes Were Watching God, she still faced physical assault, dominance, and violence in her love marriage.

In the end, she murdered her last husband in self-defense, and after being free from murder charges by white jury members, she returned to her hometown roots, where she thought about love as the blossoming pear tree kissed and loved by the bees in spring. She felt this love once in her entire life when a local boy kissed her before her marriage.

Their Eyes Were Watching God: Review

Throughout the story of this book, you can witness the struggle, abundance, dominance, ill-treatment, sexual assault, domestic violence, and many other dark shades of society that a woman has been through without having any choice but to accept.

Even though the protagonist tries to escape her compulsive situation and look for her true desire for love, she also gets disappointed in her love marriage. In this Their Eyes Were Watching God book, the author tries to draw readers' attention to a very important thing in a male-dominated society: men usually behave the way they are taught or supposed to behave in society.

That means men are also the victims of a society where they are compelled to perform their power and dominance over women. So that society accepts and respects them. The story from Their Eyes Were Watching God gives a very simple and strong message that we are all the creation of nature by God. So, we should be guided by nature and natural calls instead of following the social stigma.
