Resume Header: Otherwise known as contact information, this should be placed at the very top of a resume. This enables a hiring manager to easily get in contact with you if needed. At minimum, the information should contain your phone number, name, and email address should be included within this part;

Profile (Personal summary): Resume summaries should be short, two or three sentences about your qualifications and accomplishments throughout your career/college life. This gives HR a glimpse of your skills and achievements;

Work Experience: Here, job seekers should list all specific details about their employment history. This always includes the names and locations of past and current employers if you have different working experiences (internships are equally included), and should include the position title. It is strongly recommended to list your past experience chronologically so that your resume is organized clearly and logically;

Personal Skills: This can be advantageous to your resume but shouldn’t steal the show and be placed before your work experience. In this section, relevant skills to the job are to be included, leaving out any unnecessary information; 

Education Background: This section should be composed of the different certifications or degrees you have obtained, the institutions from which you earned them, and the dates they were given/awarded. More so, you can optionally put your GPA here when it’s relatively high, like 3.0/4 or over. Otherwise, forget about it.

 

What Should Be Avoided?

After you finish writing, please make sure that your resume is factually edited. The writing in your resume must be concise, brief, and to the point. Use of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation must be proofread and checked over and over, all while being in accordance with your tone. No one wants to view a resume full of lapses and mistakes. Try to demonstrate your professionalism and sincerity.

It is noteworthy that fabrications and exaggeration in your resume are resolutely not recommended and generally frowned upon. It is strongly suggest not to fool hiring managers as misinformation can be easily fact checked and fabrications discovered. In other words, honesty is the best policy and key characteristic many employers seek out.

As to the resume’s design, it depends on the industry and the job title you are applying for. For example, if you are pursuing a visual designer role or any related job, then it is acceptable to skillfully and boldly combine different colors within your resume.
